Julián Álvarez ended a 175-day goal drought in the UEFA Champions League, scoring his 50th career goal for Atlético Madrid during a draw in Stuttgart, though the squad lamented a controversial penalty decision.
The Argentina forward had not scored since April 29, 2026, when he converted a penalty against Arsenal in a Champions League semifinal match that ultimately eliminated Atlético. His return to the scoresheet in Germany marked his 18th European goal in 26 appearances for the club, bringing his total tally to 50 goals in 114 matches across all competitions alongside 19 assists.
Speaking in his post-match press conference, Simeone praised the forward’s work rate and decisive quality. He is a decisive player to get to the places we need to reach,
Simeone said, adding that he was pleased with the player’s incredible physical effort and the quality of his strike.
The third matchday of the European campaign left Atlético with one win, one loss, and a draw. Álvarez connected with a pass from Ademola Lookman before firing a shot into the top corner past goalkeeper Dennis Seimen to break his protracted scoring drought in front of roughly 1,100 traveling Atlético supporters.
The forward logged nearly 80 minutes on the pitch before being substituted. Teammate Jan Oblak underscored the squad’s reliance on the Argentine’s attacking output. We need many goals from Julián, he is aware of that, today he has scored and hopefully he continues with that streak because to be at the top we need many goals,
Oblak said.
Despite the milestone goal, Atlético players voiced frustration over a disputed refereeing decision late in the match. The visiting side appealed for a penalty after defender David Hancko went down during a corner kick taken by Alejandro Grimaldo.
Hancko expressed confusion over the intervention of the video assistant referee system after the match. It is very clear that I do not understand that the VAR enters into some situations, and does not enter into others,
Hancko said. It is something that I do not quite understand, but I think everyone on TV has been able to see it.
Simeone and Oblak declined to comment on the incident in their post-match remarks, stating they had not yet reviewed replays of the disputed corner kick.
Atlético Madrid returns to domestic competition following the European fixture in Germany. The club continues its league schedule with players and coaching staff turning focus toward maintaining offensive momentum in domestic and continental play.
