Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann frontrunners to replace Michael Carrick at Manchester United

According to Sky Sports, pressure is mounting on Michael Carrick following Manchester United’s poor start to the season, with the club already considering potential replacements should they decide to make a managerial change.

Any decision on Carrick’s future is expected to involve director of football Jason Wilcox, chief executive Omar Berrada and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

United’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth extended their winless run to eight matches and left the club hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone. The senior figures at Old Trafford had already begun evaluating alternative coaching options before the latest setback.

Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and ex-Bayern Munich and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann are currently viewed as the leading candidates if Carrick departs. Both managers are available immediately and would not require compensation payments.

Howe is reportedly open to discussions should the role become available, while Nagelsmann is understood to have strong connections within United’s recruitment structure through his previous work with Christopher Vivell at RB Leipzig.

The report adds that Unai Emery and Antonio Conte have also been considered, although neither is currently viewed as a frontrunner. Emery remains committed to his project at Aston Villa.
