Nottingham Forest are adapting to life under Oliver Glasner very slowly, with the Reds now in the bottom three of the Premier League.
Tottenham’s win over Coventry means the Reds are in 19th place with five points – and one win – from seven matches so far. Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal did offer positives, but in four home Premier League games, the Reds are yet to score a single goal.
Troy Deeney slammed the impact of Liam Delap after the weekend defeat. He’s not alone when it comes to missing chances, though, and Chris Wood was arguably more of a culprit at the weekend after wasting a golden chance to score.
With the head coach’s 3-4-2-1 system taking to settle, there is an argument that a 4-2-3-1 could easily be deployed with this squad, and we’ve taken a look at how that could look.
Since returning to the top flight, Forest have enjoyed their best days with a 4-2-3-1 system. Right now, the Reds are having limited success with the 3-4-2-1 that Glasner likes and there is a sense that it could be tweaked.
As the Reds chased the game on Sunday, Glasner took a central defender off, and in the closing stages, the team had two very good chances to grab a goal and earn a share of the spoils.
Matz Sels would naturally still play in goal, with Daniel Munoz and Neco Williams dropping into play as full-backs, something that both players should be more than capable of doing going forward.
At central defence, there are options, but right now you’d take Murillo playing alongside Ousmane Diomande, who was brilliant against Arsenal and produced his strongest performance yet.
In a 4-2-3-1, Ibrahim Sangare could complement James McAtee just nicely. That isn’t a slight on Xaver Schlager, but right now it’s difficult to see what he offers Forest that Sangare can’t achieve in the team.

Going forward is where things get interesting. Callum Hudson-Odoi is an asset in the Forest squad, and right now, he’s not getting anywhere near enough game time, with the player forced to feed completely from cameo outings.
The former Chelsea man could play on the left, with Dan Ndoye switching to the right and Morgan Gibbs-White slotting into the team through the middle in his natural number 10 position.
Spearheading the team, you’d have Liam Delap, who would almost certainly thrive on crosses coming into the box, whilst Igor Jesus and Chris Wood could provide backup to the man signed from Chelsea.
For now, it does feel as though Glasner will stick with his tried and tested formation. However, he needs things to click into place soon as the Reds can’t afford to sink any lower this season and must get out of the bottom three as a matter of urgency in the coming weeks.
