ESPN radio legend Dan Davis has died at 84 years old.
One of the founding members of ESPN Radio in 1992, “The Duke” spent two decades on Sports Center as a reporter.
Davis was well known for his call of Doug Flutie’s Hail Mary pass for Boston College against Miami in 1984 on WRKO/ABC Radio.
But his career truly took off with ESPN, and colleagues shared kind words about him after his death.
“What a voice he had. What a great man he was,” Mike Golic Sr. said.
“I was happy to call him friend.”
Boston College football also shared a tribute for Davis on social media.
“Boston College Football mourns the passing of Dan Davis, whose voice became part of the program’s history,” the program said in a statement.
“From calling Doug Flutie’s iconic Hail Mary in 1984 to dozens of BC Football broadcasts, his legacy will forever be part of The Heights.”
SportsCenter legend Scott Van Pelt also shared a tribute to Davis on social media.
“Dan ‘The Duke’ Davis was the best,” he wrote.
“Not sure he got it initially, but @ryenarussillo got him to buy in and The Duke made it memorable.
“RIP to a legend. Love to his family and friends.”
