Supercars are taking over Concours.
Last Saturday's Concours at Wynn Las Vegas was overwhelming even by the standards of the term used in Las Vegas. Has there ever been a greater collection of supercars/hypercars ever?
On the first couple fairways of the Wynn Golf Course there were:
10 McLaren F1s
10 Koenigseggs
7 Aston Martin Valhallas
17 Bugattis
40 Paganis
25 Porsche Carrera GTs
And more GT1 Le Mans race cars than have been together since they raced on the grid at the 24 Hours in the 1990s. Maybe even more.
And that was just on the main lawn. There were more of them scattered all over the Wynn Hotel and in various far reaches of the golf course. When security opened the gates Saturday morning, hundreds of male teenagers with everything from handheld cell phones to sophisticated video image capturing devices were let loose onto the field. On another fairway, looking just a little anachronistic, if truth be told, were the more or less traditional concours entries, none of which seemed to produce the ardor of the super/hyper/gee-whiz cars on the main sections of grass.
This is the future, whether you like it or not.
"Dude, McLaren McL 6GT!" said one, delighted to see that company's modern tribute to the original 1969 M6 GT that was founder Bruce McLaren's personal road-legal race car.
"It's the Pagani Huayra 70 Anima!" said another, referring, of course, to the one-of-one hypercar built by Pagani's Grandi Complicazioni division as the third and final installment of a special three-car trilogy celebrating company founder Horacio Pagani's 70th birthday.
These kids knew every detail. They didn't have to wait a month for a car magazine to come in the mail. Thanks to this newfangled internet thing, they knew every detail as soon as it hit.
And all of them, it seemed, had an IG account, a TikTok page, some presence on the YouTube, and probably several other social media outlets so new and youth-oriented that an old guy like me can't begin to fathom, let alone log on to any of them.
Here are a few shots I got before the stampede of youth trampled me into the ground, rolled me into the carp-infested fake stream, and I was sucked into the Wynn Golf Course's modern and efficient lawn-watering irrigation pump like a drowned gopher. Farewell, past—gurgle, hack, spew—hello brave new world that has such cars in it.
There were 25 Porsche Carrera GTs on display at The Wynn Concours (Las Vegas Concours d'Elegance), the largest single gathering of Carrera GTs in the world.
