Zimbabwean striker Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya faces a new challenge at AmaZulu after his impressive start to the 2026/27 season attracted increased attention from opposition defenders.

Ngwenya has scored 10 goals in as many matches for Usuthu, establishing himself as a key attacking figure.

However, the forward believes rival teams are now working harder to contain him as they look to limit his influence on matches.

Speaking to SABC Sport, Ngwenya admitted that the increased attention from defenders is forcing him to reconsider his approach in front of goal.

“Everyone is preparing for me but it’s gonna give others a chance to score because everyone is coming for me,” he said.

The Zimbabwean acknowledged that he must find alternative ways to penetrate opposition defences, particularly as opponents become more familiar with his movements and scoring methods.

“It’s a bit demanding now because I have to find another way to penetrate because everyone is looking for how I’m scoring, so I must find another way to score,” Ngwenya added.

Ngwenya faces a test of adaptability

The striker’s comments highlight the challenge that can accompany a prolific start to a campaign. While scoring regularly can boost a player’s confidence, it can also make them a primary target for opposition defenders.

For Ngwenya, maintaining his scoring form could depend on how quickly he adapts to the increased attention and varies his approach in attacking situations.

The forward also recognised that his teammates could benefit from opponents concentrating on stopping him, potentially creating opportunities for other AmaZulu attackers.

However, turning that possibility into a consistent advantage will require Usuthu to make the most of the space and chances available when opposition defences focus on Ngwenya.

AmaZulu coach Arthur Zwane has also stressed the importance of the striker improving certain aspects of his game.

Zwane highlights areas for improvement

Ngwenya was unable to find the net when AmaZulu defeated Kruger United 1-0 in the Carling Knockout at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.

Hendrick Ekstein scored from the penalty spot to secure Usuthu’s place in the quarter-finals, while Ngwenya struggled to make his opportunities count.

Zwane explained that the striker tends to perform better when he scores early in a match, pointing to two early opportunities against Kruger United that Ngwenya failed to convert.

The coach also criticised his reactions in those situations and offered advice on how he should approach challenges from defenders.

“You can’t push the ball and expose your ball to the right when the defender is coming from the right side. Put it to your left and put your body across,” Zwane explained.

The coach’s assessment underlines the importance of decision-making and composure as Ngwenya looks to maintain his impressive scoring record.

With opposition teams increasingly focused on containing him, the Zimbabwean’s ability to adapt could prove crucial to sustaining his strong start and helping AmaZulu remain competitive throughout the campaign.
