Liverpool fans needed little evidence that Rio Ngumoha is going to be a superstar, but the winger certainly reaffirmed the belief that he can feature at the top level with his display against Villarreal in midweek.
The 18-year-old has grown into a regular option in the senior team, landing regular minutes from the bench and occasional starts last season, before landing more opportunities at the start of this season. The latest came against the Spanish side in the Champions League, with a start on the flank in a team filled with changes, a fact evident early in the game.
Goals from Georges Mikautadze and Sergi Cardona gave Villarreal a quick lead, as Liverpool clumsily got through the first 35 minutes without looking like a threat. That turned around before half-time, however, when Alexis Mac Allister and Ronald Araujo profited from set-piece opportunities to draw the game level.
Despite some poor performances across the team in the opening stages, Ngumoha was the one who stood out for the right reasons, as he remained the driving force behind the little the Reds managed to do early on.
The England international was consistently capable of drawing defenders to him, driving them backward with his ability to shift the ball between both feet, keeping them guessing at every twist and turn.
The quality of Ngumoha's display was evident in the Anfield crowd, who raised their voices whenever he was on the ball, and chants of "Rio, Rio, Rio" followed.
He was rewarded for his fine work with an assist to Araujo before half-time, along with another for setting up Mac Allister, which saw him become the youngest player to either score or assist in the club's history at 18 years and 52 days old.
During the game, the Liverpool fans on social media also sang their praises for the winger, as he continues to show why he is so highly rated.
One supporter went on to say, "Ngumoha is a genius," accompanied by a clip of the star performing some step-overs before going past two defenders.
"Rio Ngumoha is becoming a right winger," one fan stated. "Game by game, he's gaining more confidence in that position. You love to see it."
Another fan believed it was the best display of any player this season, stating: "Performance of the season from any Liverpool player this from Ngumoha."
It was yet another night that showed what Ngumoha can do, with the terrifying thought for rivals being the fact that the Liverpool star can keep getting better and better in the future.
It reinforces the fact that the Reds need to sort out a new contract for the youngster before looking ahead to an exciting few years with him in the forward line.
