Delville sprinter wins bronze at African University Games

Delville’s Siyabonga Uzoho bags bronze at All Africa University Games in Egypt.

Delville resident Siyabonga Uzoho wins bronze in Egypt.

Delville resident Siyabonga Uzoho has returned home with international silverware after clinching a bronze medal at the 12th Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) Games.

Held at the American University in Cairo, Egypt, he represented the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Athletics Club.

The 23-year-old sprinted to an impressive third-place podium finish in the competitive senior men’s 100-meter event.

The tournament, also known as the All Africa University Games, took place from September 8 to 16 and marked Uzoho’s debut on the continental stage.

Delville resident Siyabonga Uzoho brought home bronze medal in his continental competition debut.

Reflecting on his maiden African competition, Uzoho shared that competing abroad provided invaluable lessons despite the challenging conditions.

“The atmosphere was different, though it was hot. We were there for two weeks, and it’s an experience that one learns plenty from,” said Uzoho.

Uzoho’s podium performance contributed to a stellar overall showing for UJ. Despite fielding a compact contingent of just 50 student-athletes and support staff across squash, table tennis, basketball, and track and field, UJ punched well above its weight.
The institution captured 27 medals to secure second place overall in the continental standings.

The bronze in Cairo caps off a standout 2026 season for the Delville sprinter, who kicked off his year targeting top honours at the ASA National Track and Field Championships. He anchored his team to gold in the 4x100m relay and reached the semifinals of the senior men’s 100m.

Just two weeks later at the University Sport South Africa (USSA) Championships, Uzoho claimed another gold in the 4x100m relay alongside a strong fourth-place finish in the 100m. In April, he dominated the track at the inaugural SuperSport Simbine Classic at Pilditch Stadium, taking first place in the senior men’s 100m. With a bronze medal now added to his growing collection of achievements, Uzoho continues to establish himself as one of the region’s premier sprinting prospects.
