Vincent Kompany collapses at training

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital after collapsing while watching the club’s reserve team train on Friday.

The 40-year-old had been unwell with a virus and missed Tuesday’s pre-match news conference ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League clash against Arsenal.

However, the former Manchester City and Belgium defender returned to the touchline for Wednesday’s match against the English Premier League side.

Reports in Germany indicate that Kompany is in a stable condition in hospital.

“Vincent Kompany required medical attention after collapsing during an FC Bayern reserve team training session on Friday,” the Bundesliga club said in a statement.

“The first-team head coach was watching the second string’s session.

“Kompany is undergoing thorough examinations in hospital and will remain under medical care.

“His coaching staff will oversee training and match activities until further notice.”

Bayern are scheduled to face Freiburg in the German Bundesliga on Sunday.

The club’s sporting director, Max Eberl, said Kompany’s health remained the priority and wished him a speedy recovery.

“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” Eberl said.

“Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs.

“His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery.”

Kompany’s assistant, Aaron Danks, had also taken charge of Bayern’s pre-match news conference ahead of the Arsenal game.

German football journalist Taufig Khalil told BBC Radio 5 Live that Kompany had been “suffering with the virus for about a week”.

He said the problem became apparent during Bayern’s match against Leipzig last Saturday, when Kompany did not look well.

“He didn’t do the press conference after, and Max Eberl told us that he’s suffering with a virus,” Khalil said.

He added that many were surprised to see Kompany on the touchline for Wednesday’s match against Arsenal, standing in the pouring rain in Munich, as they had expected Danks to take his place.

“The problem was that maybe you couldn’t bench Vincent Kompany, the game was too important for him,” he said.

Khalil added that Bayern had confirmed Kompany was in a stable condition. He also reported that a helicopter had landed at the club’s training ground during the incident, although Kompany was taken to hospital by medical car rather than by helicopter.
