Peter Crouch warns Liverpool against $133M transfer move in January

The January transfer window could offer a chance for Liverpool to make additions to the roster, but former player Peter Crouch has warned against one specific move

Liverpool has been warned against making a move for Alex Scott in the January transfer window, with former player Peter Crouch advising against a deal for the Bournemouth star.

It comes as the midfielder appears to be available on the market this winter, after reports suggested that the Cherries have softened their stance on an exit.

Scott is approaching the final 18 months of his contract on the south coast, and while his club has attempted to agree a new contract extension with a potential release clause, it seems a fresh deal is unlikely to be signed.

That has all played into the possibility of a transfer in January, with Bournemouth likely to consider offers around the $133 million mark, especially if the team is safe from relegation.

While it remains to be seen whether a move will follow, links have continued to surface regarding Scott and a switch to Liverpool, which would see him follow in the footsteps of Andoni Iraola.

The England international featured 89 times under the Spaniard, with a potential reunion on the cards that could see the midfielder slot in seamlessly into a tactical system he knows well.

While that move seems an obvious one for Liverpool, it's a deal that Crouch has warned against when speaking exclusively to Paddy Power.

He said: "I always like Liverpool when they've got more of a workmanlike midfield. I do like Scott, and I think he's a really, really talented player. I know the England manager speaks really highly of him as well.

“But Elliot Anderson would have been ideal. He's a top player, someone like that who has a little bit more steel in them. I think at times they [Liverpool midfield] can be a little bit lightweight, can't they? Scott’s a top player, but I think Liverpool need a little bit more steel.”

It suggests an interesting dilemma between the type of player Liverpool needs for the team and the type of player who may suit the way the club has played for many years.

Whether the Reds take that advice remains to be seen, as preparations continue for the January transfer window and the summer market beyond.

One of the considerations the hierarchy will have to make concerns the transfer fee and whether they can afford to invest such a large amount of money, having already spent heavily on parts of the forward ranks.

The midfield will be a key area of focus, but so too will the defense over the next year, creating an interesting dynamic for the recruitment team.
