ANGOLAN giants Petro de Luanda have sacked coach João Pedro Sousa following their 2-0 defeat to Zimbabwean champions Scottland FC in the CAF Champions League on Sunday.
Sousa was dismissed on Tuesday after a lengthy meeting with the club’s executive on Monday.
Reports indicate that the Portuguese coach was informed of the decision on Tuesday morning and will not be in charge when the two sides meet in Friday’s second preliminary round return leg.
Although Petro de Luanda have yet to issue an official statement confirming Sousa’s departure, the club’s social media accounts have already posted a picture of the coach accompanied by the message: “Thank You.”
Petro are currently second on the Angolan league table after six matches and remain unbeaten in domestic competition.
However, their defeat to Scottland is believed to have prompted the club to part ways with Sousa, despite their strong domestic form.
The two-time CAF Champions League semi-finalists will now have to prepare for Friday’s return leg without the Portuguese tactician.
Meanwhile, Scottland have left Zimbabwe for Angola ahead of the decisive encounter.
Mabviravira need only avoid defeat by a three-goal margin to secure a place in the next round of the competition.
