LSU's Defense Is Dominant; A Closer Look Shows a Masterpiece That's Still Improving

LSU's defense is elite, and the numbers prove it. But it's still getting better.

LSU enters the final month of the regular season at 6-2 overall and 3-2 in SEC play, firmly in the race for a Playoff spot and the SEC championship.

Through eight games, defensive coordinator Blake Baker’s unit has shown flashes of championship dominance while also having some distinct problems.

At home, the Tigers have held five opponents to under 15 points and pitched a shutout against Mississippi State. But the road has been a different story.

In away games, LSU has had to overcome slow starts, but finally found a groove against Auburn, winning 38-17. But LSU still has a critical hurdle, with multiple highly ranked conference matchups remaining on the November schedule.

Dominant Defensive Stretch at Home

In its six victories, LSU’s front seven has consistently dominated teams by taking away their running games.

The Tigers opened the year by smothering Clemson 51-10, surrendering just 145 yards and holding Clemson to a 7.7% third-down conversion rate. LSU followed up by holding Louisiana Tech to 228 total yards while stopping 72.7% of third-down attempts.

When Texas A&M visited Death Valley, LSU turned in a masterclass by allowing just 210 total yards and minus 13 rushing yards. A complete turnaround from the matchups against the Aggies the two seasons before.

The Tigers recorded an 80% third-down stop rate against McNeese State before posting a 31-0 shutout against Mississippi State, limiting the Bulldogs to just 192 yards. In victories, the defense has limited its opponents to 1.5 explosive plays of 20-plus yards per game.

The numbers completely shift when looking at LSU’s two setbacks on the road at Ole Miss and Kentucky.

LSU allowed 442 yards and 32 points in a 32-24 loss at Ole Miss, letting the Rebels convert 58.3% of third downs while giving up six explosive plays. Similarly, Kentucky generated 418 yards and 35 points in a 35-34 overtime victory, converting 8-of-14 third downs against the Tigers.

The secondary struggled with helping in the run game and defending passes during both losses.

In two losses, however, LSU allowed a combined 11 explosive plays and saw its opponent third-down stop rate plunge to 42.3%.

Sustaining Good Production for a Tough Stretch

LSU rebounded in its most recent road test at Auburn, sacking Auburn quarterbacks seven times and forcing three straight second-half three-and-outs.

The key to carrying that momentum into November games against talented teams like Alabama and Texas will require maintaining a high level of front-seven pressure. On top of that, LSU has to eliminate pre-snap communication errors away from Baton Rouge.

The Tigers have proven they possess elite defensive capability when forcing third-and-long scenarios. If LSU continues setting the edge on early downs and keeps safety help over the top, the defense can anchor a strong finish to the 2026 campaign.
