Former France head coach Didier Deschamps isn’t keen on replacing Michael Carrick in the Man Utd dugout, according to reports in the French media.
Foot Mercato claim that the 58-year-old, who won the World Cup in 2018, was “contacted” by the Red Devils, but he has little interest in joining a team that is facing problems both on and off the pitch.
Supporters on X are mostly in agreement that Deschamps would not have been the right fit for the club anyway:

@UnitedStandMUFC @Santi_J_FM @footmercato Well to be honest he wasn’t exactly the easiest to get on with either.
If I believe he’s had several spats with players when in charge of the French team— Daniel Green (danshuks) (@Danshuks) November 6, 2026
@UnitedStandMUFC @Santi_J_FM @footmercato He didn’t even take him too long to reject us😂😂
Those of you who love Glazers and INEOS, can you see what our club is becoming? Players rejecting us now managers are doing the same.

The comeback win over Roma on Tuesday night has bought Carrick some time, but another defeat to Aston Villa at home this weekend could lead to the 45-year-old losing his job.
It is believed that the next international break is seen as a good time to make a change due to the gap between fixtures, so due diligence on other managers (such as Deschamps) is being carried out to ensure there are options available to replace Carrick.
Former Newcastle manager Eddie Howe remains the odds-on favourite to be hired. It is believed that Director of Football Jason Wilcox is backing his appointment, and he holds significant sway over Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
Discussions are likely to be held with former Bayern Munich and Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann as well, with Head of Recruitment Christopher Vivell advocating for his fellow countryman to be considered.
Deschamps would certainly have been an interesting alternative if he were interested in the job. His experience would have given him a lot of influence across all aspects of the club, but the fact that he has been away from club management for 14 years means it would have been a risky appointment.
