Celtic's Europa League campaign took another blow as they were convincingly beaten 4-1 by Benfica in the Portuguese capital on Thursday night.

It was always going to be a tough ask for Celtic to go to Lisbon and get a positive result, but they were the masters of their own downfall as they made it two defeats from two in the competition.

The home loss against Ferencvaros was part of a 'painful' week prior to the international break that also saw the Hoops beaten twice by Old Firm rivals Rangers, and Martin O'Neill raise questions over his future.

O'Neill decided to stay and the 2-0 win at Motherwell on Sunday was much better, but the defeat to Marco Silva's men on Thursday only made it clear how far behind Celtic are when it comes to European competition.

In front of a near 60,000 crowd, Celtic and Dane Murray made the worst possible start when the centre-back gave away a penalty in the opening minutes, which former Premier League striker Jhon Duran duly converted.

The Bhoys found themselves 3-0 down after 36 minutes when Duran netted his brace, with his goals sandwiched by another from Alexander Bah.

There was an improved performance from O'Neill's men in the second half but ultimately it was too late and the damage had already been done.

Unsurprisingly, Murray was one of a number of Celtic players who was given a 3/10 rating for his performance by 67 Hail Hail, but he was also joined on the same mark by goalkeeper Viljami Sinisalo and Sebastian Tounekti.

The latter was hooked at half-time following a nightmare display on the big occasion, as he gave the ball away and then completely lost his runner for the second Benfica goal.

There are already calls for the Tunisian to be dropped permanently from the XI by O'Neill, although attacking midfielder Oliver Sorensen was just as bad as his 24-year-old teammate.

Almost half of Oliver Sorensen's Celtic minutes have come in the Europa League following his summer move from Parma, but he is underwhelming so far.

The 24-year-old joined the Hoops on loan with an option to buy in the summer, but based on his performances so far, it's hard to see the Glasgow giants activating it.

Neither side disclosed how much the option is, but it's worth remembering that Parma paid up to £8.6m to sign him from FC Midtjylland in the summer of 2025.

It was a night to forget for Sorensen against Benfica, just weeks after he was hooked at half-time of his team's 3-1 home defeat to Ferencvaros in the same competition.

The attacking midfielder's display in Lisbon suggested he simply isn't cut out for these big European nights, as he was also awarded 3/10 by 67 Hail Hail for his display.

Sorensen was noted as being 'anonymous' and allowing the game to 'pass him by', although unlike Tounekti he was given some of the second half to improve his performance.

That didn't happen and he was hooked by O'Neill 12 minutes into the second 45, in what was a miserable night for the Dane and his teammates.

Sorensen has only made one Scottish Premiership start so far and that shouldn't change against Hearts at Parkhead on Sunday.

O'Neill needs to relegate him to the substitutes' bench again, and the 24-year-old needs to show a lot more on his next appearance to prove he is worthy of starting matches for the Hoops.
