Liverpool supporters are trying to guess how their attack will line up against Manchester City on Sunday after Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo were both ruled out through injury.
The Reds will be without an out-and-out No. 9 for the visit of the Premier League rule-breakers, with Lewis Koumas and Federico Chiesa both candidates to play through the middle instead.
Andoni Iraola could shift Bradley Barcola centrally as well, while there is also a possibility that Victor Munoz is the man chosen as Isak’s new deputy. Whoever it is, and whoever makes up the rest of Liverpool‘s front three on Sunday, though, they will have virtually no history in scoring goals at Premier League level.
In losing Isak and Gakpo, not only are Liverpool being robbed of five Premier League goals for the season, but they are also losing the vast experience of the two players. Isak has 61 goals in the division for Newcastle and Liverpool, while Gakpo has 33.
Take them away, and between Barcola, Chiesa, Munoz, Koumas and Rio Ngumoha, there are only five Premier League goals.
Chiesa has two – the last of which came more than one year ago in September 2025 – with Ngumoha also finding the net twice, most recently during the win over Fulham in April.
Munoz did score on only his second appearance in the division, but that remains his only strike for Liverpool to date, while Barcola and Koumas are yet to register in the Premier League.
It is not only that Liverpool will have barely any experience of finding the net within their front line on Sunday, it is that they are coming up against one of the most prolific teams in the current division.
Enzo Maresca’s City are not the City of old, but they can still count on the goals of Erling Haaland, who has 117 in the Premier League. Antoine Semenyo, who is potentially a doubt to face his former manager, has 39, while Illiman Ndiaye and Jeremy Doku have 26 goals between them.
That’s not even to count Phil Foden, who has 68 Premier League goals, or Rayan Cherki, who has already notched up seven.
Clearly, there are appearances and minutes to take into account here, but that is another problem for Liverpool. All in all, Barcola, Chiesa, Munoz, Ngumoha and Koumas have played only 62 times in the English top division, with the majority of those being Chiesa’s 32, most of which have been short cameos.
Liverpool should be delighted to have Jeremy Jacquet fit, meaning they can rely on the defence which has served them so well during the season so far. But when it comes to the attack, things are looking much more scary. Someone is going to have to step up.
