Manchester City fans have united to demand a transfer U-turn on James Trafford after watching Gianluigi Donnarumma’s costly error in pre-season action.

As widely reported, Leeds United are on the verge of finalising a club-record agreement worth an initial £45million to bring Trafford to Elland Road.

The 23-year-old is pursuing consistent first-team football after playing second fiddle to Donnarumma under previous boss Pep Guardiola and now Enzo Maresca.

However, the Italian international’s display against K-League All-Stars in South Korea on Wednesday (5 August) has City supporters calling for a dramatic rethink.

Donnarumma error sparks goalkeeping debate

City secured a 3-1 victory in Seoul, with Rayan Ait-Nouri opening the scoring just nine minutes in.

However, the lead lasted barely three minutes before Kim Dae-won caught Donnarumma out, beating the 27-year-old at his near post with a low shot that lacked significant power.

Though City recovered thanks to goals from Tijjani Reijnders and Divin Mubama, the nature of the equaliser sent shockwaves across social media.

Fans were quick to point out that Trafford, who registered eight clean sheets in 17 appearances for City last term, should not be allowed to leave.

One fan wrote: “Has James Trafford actually left yet?”

Another posted on X: “We’re really about to let Trafford leave with this b** in goal?”

One supporter echoed the same sentiments, writing: “We sold James Trafford for this 6’7 [Jordan] Pickford.”

Leeds United fans await announcement

Despite the social media uproar, Leeds United are on course to announce the blockbuster signing of Trafford from Manchester City in due course.

Daniel Farke‘s side have been desperate for a top-class number one after losing both Illan Meslier and Karl Darlow this summer, and view Trafford as the man to guard their goal for years to come.

While Donnarumma’s pre-season rustiness is a concern for Manchester City fans, the £45m total package agreed for Trafford is simply too lucrative for the Cityzens to ignore.

The young Englishman desires regular, guaranteed minutes, and Elland Road provides the perfect platform.

Expect the deal to cross the line regardless of the panic in the City fanbase.
