Marc Marquez stamped his authority early at the 2026 Qatar Grand Prix, clocking the fastest time in FP1 at Lusail International Circuit, with Marco Bezzecchi and Fabio Di Giannantonio trailing closely behind. The session, contested by a reduced grid of 18 riders due to Yamaha’s boycott amid ongoing Middle East tensions, marked a critical juncture in the championship battle, especially with Jorge Martin making a determined comeback after a wrist fracture.

The Qatar GP weekend commenced under a cloud of geopolitical controversy, yet the riders took to the track resolutely. Marc Marquez, riding for Ducati, surged to the top with a 1:52.278 lap, setting a benchmark that challenged the field despite the tricky conditions. Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi held P2, just 0.110 seconds adrift, while Fabio Di Giannantonio of VR46 secured P3, demonstrating impressive pace on the drying but still dust-affected surface.

The session was punctuated by incidents highlighting the circuit’s low grip levels. Honda replacement rider Jake Dixon triggered the first yellow flag after losing the front at Turn 15 on his initial lap. Brad Binder’s high-speed crash at Turn 7 followed five minutes later, with the South African unharmed but underscoring the challenging track conditions. Dust on the racing line further complicated grip, as riders struggled with tyre performance and track cleanliness early in the weekend.

Jorge Martin’s return was a major storyline. The Aprilia star, sidelined by a wrist fracture sustained at Phillip Island and absent from Sepang’s races, showed promising speed by positioning fifth, just 0.734 seconds from Marquez. Despite visible discomfort after each run, Martin remained focused, collaborating closely with his crew chief to optimise the RS-GP26’s setup. His resilience signals a fierce contest ahead as Marquez seeks his eighth MotoGP crown, needing to outscore Martin by 30 points this weekend.

Francesco Bagnaia, Marquez’s Ducati teammate, slotted into sixth, narrowly trailing Martin. Pedro Acosta and Fabio Di Giannantonio advanced past Martin momentarily, but a late technical issue forced Acosta to stop at Turn 6, allowing Di Giannantonio to reclaim third place. Other notable performances included Raul Fernandez in seventh and Luca Marini eighth, maintaining competitive form despite the challenging conditions.

Marquez’s FP1 dominance sets the tone for the weekend’s strategic battle. His margin over Bezzecchi and Martin, combined with the physical demands visible on Martin’s return, indicate a high-stakes duel for the championship. The reduced grid heightens the pressure as every point becomes pivotal in this tightly contested season.
