Gary Player is unquestionably one of the greatest golfers in the history of the sport.
Player had many strengths, but his bunker play was arguably his standout attribute.
During his prime, Player possessed an uncannily silky touch from the sand, just like many South African professional golfers who followed him.
Since retiring from playing competitively, Gary Player has shared numerous tips to help amateur golfers improve.
The 90-year-old forged a hugely successful career for himself by working incredibly hard on all aspects of his game.
And as mentioned before, bunker play was the nine-time major winner’s speciality. Finding the sand was never a problem for Player. In fact, he always saw a bunker shot as an opportunity to hole out.
The South African took to his official X account to share a bunker tip that he believes will help amateur golfers improve when playing out of the sand.
“If that’s your ball, you’ve got to hit that exact spot,“ Player said while pointing down at his ball in the sand.
“So if you move like that, or like that (backwards or forwards), the odds of you hitting that spot are remote.
“So you stand wide, with your weight favoring your left side. You never move off. Just stay there.

“Now, the next thing is to cock your wrist early. Now, the full shot in golf, we don’t cock the wrists; we get it back in one piece. But with a bunker shot, you cock the wrists early.
“Why? Because if you wind up, you can then unwind. If you wind up, you get into a position to have some acceleration.“
Player is highlighting the need for stability when playing bunker shots. Without a stable base, it’s almost impossible to be a consistently good bunker player.
As the nine-time major champion said, widening your stance will help you with this. With your weight mostly towards your lead leg, you then need to drive down into the sand with plenty of speed while maintaining the loft on the club-face throughout impact.
If you take those steps, you will almost certainly improve from the sand.
