Newcastle United can unlock January spending power despite threat of UEFA penalties

The Magpies will be restricted to how much they can spend in the next window

Newcastle United will need to offload stars in January if they are to make changes to their squad for the first half of 2027.

That is the tough reality facing Matthias Jaissle as he gets to grips with a young and arguably undercooked squad in his first few months as boss. Newcastle are under scrutiny from UEFA after being fined for breaking SCR rules and were warned of further penalties if they step out of line with transfers.

It leaves Newcastle in a position where they'd need to sell stars to buy in the winter in order to make room on the budget for new faces. That was also the case towards the end of the window when high earner Nick Woltemade was loaned to Juventus with the Serie A club agreeing to pay all of his wages in order to accommodate £51m signing Matias Fernandez-Pardo.

As things stand the Newcastle board are not expecting to make any big changes to the squad unless a severe lack of form kicks in or major injury worries. Although there could be scope for one or two additions if Newcastle manage to find a club for Nick Pope, who they failed to offload in the summer despite brief interest from Celtic.

Pope's representatives are keeping a close eye on the market at opportunities in January, but by the same token, he can run his contract down and leave as a free agent, with Bayern Munich looking closely at this situation.

And despite a vow from Jaissle to keep Joe Willock, there is still a determination from Turkish club Besiktas to lure him to the Super Lig with a cash sale another way to unlock some spending power at the start of the new year.

When asked about January purchases, Jaissle said: "I think this (knocking down the door) is the approach from every coach. First of all, we trust our squad, the current squad we have here, but there is always space and needs, usually also to improve, to bring players in where it's needed.

"Until January, that's still a long time. Many things can happen performance-wise, injury-wise, so you need to work on options throughout the whole year. But now it's also time to work with the group in the best possible way.

"I mention also so, so often, that I'm really pleased and happy with that group. A young group, but really willing to learn and to improve."

A UEFA document issued in July read: "The Club did not comply with the stability requirements as set out in Articles 85 to 92 of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Sustainability Regulations (“CLFS”) – Edition 2025.

"In particular, the Club failed to fulfil the Football Earnings rule as a result of having an aggregate Football Earnings deficit above acceptable deviation in the 2025/26 season (i.e.,for the reporting periods ending in 2023, 2024 and 2025).

"In September 2025, proceedings against the Club were opened by the First Chamber of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (“CFCB”).

"On 30 June 2026, the Club agreed to a three-year period settlement agreement (the “Settlement Agreement” or the “Settlement”) with the CFCB, which is based on the elements listed below, as proposed by the CFCB."

The settlement period means Newcastle must now report to UEFA in 2026, 2027, and 2028, and UEFA stated that United will face further penalties if they have more than a €5m deficit in year one of the agreement.
