Cincinnati dropped its first game against No. 17 Houston in years on Saturday night 31-24.
UC had won five in a row before the tough offensive ripping by the Cougars. Red-hot quarterback Connor Weigman (227 ayrds, two TDS) tore the defense apart like many projected, and Houston led for nearly the whole game.
The Bearcats now have three more chances to hit bowl eligibility after losing the fourth game in the team's past five outings. It's become a common trend in the Scott Satterfield era.
Houston posted 7.9 yards per play in another brutal game for the 102nd-ranked EPA/play defense coming in. Satterfield has not been able to figure out that side of the ball, and it's killing the team each season as the weather turns.
Cincinnati wide receiver JV Gibson suffered a scary head injury in the fourth quarter and had to be taken to the hospital during the game.
"Cincinnati wide receiver JV Gibson exited the game in the fourth quarter with a head injury. Gibson was stabilized, placed on a stretcher, and transported to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center for further evaluation. He was alert and moving all extremities prior to transport," A UC statement read.
Cincinnati is now 15-16 all-time against Houston.
Cincinnati is going through the injury ringer right now after suffering many dings over the past season.
Gibson headlined that in the fourth quarter as the whole team and his family gathered on the field to watch him exit on a stretcher and cart to head to the hospital. The top UC pass catcher was alert and talked to medical personnel when he left the field as Jordan Allen got tossed from the game for the hit.
It set Cincinnati up for the game-tying touchdown at 24-24, but you never want to see anything like that (longest drive of the season, 96 yards). Time will tell this coming week how serious the injury is, but UC is going to monitor that and plenty of other injuries over the next few days. Cole Tabb also left the game with what appeared to be a head injury and Taran Tyo couldn't play at center.
Houston smacked the Bearcats' defense in the mouth up and down the field all night to the tune of 220-plus yards through the air and on the ground. Cincinnati was 111th in yards per play allowed entering this game, and it didn't improve going back to Clifton (6.36 allowed on the 2026 season).
The trials of deep conference play are dinging Cincinnati all over. Now, they have to find their first November win since 2023, or go through another painful losing streak for a fourth consecutive season.
No purchase necessary. 50 U.S./D.C. 18+. Entry opens 3PM ET Dec 6, 2026 and closes 8PM ET Dec 18, 2026. Void where prohibited. See for complete details. The College Football Playoff (CFP) is not a sponsor or administrator of this contest.

Cincinnati's steady quarterback leader played solid football on Saturday. French (19-30 for 217 yards and two scores, 13 carries for 24 yards one score and one fumble) is having the best season of his career, and he kept taking great care of the ball while executing the offense well.
He finished with a 140-plus passer rating to drive a decent day for the offense. French ranked just 69th in ESPN QBR entering the game, but he outplayed that on Saturday and showed why he's been a pretty solid replacement for Brendan Sorsby after all his issues this past offseason.
French had to deal with injuries to one of his top linemen, Tabb's issue, and Gibson's late injury, but he still dialed up the right moxie to keep the game close. Alas, his one mistake, a backwards pass in the fourth quarter, ended all of UC's hopes.
Cincinnati is trying to find some November momentum rolling next week at Iowa State in a TBD kickoff time Saturday.
