Ryan Naderi scored the goal as Rangers defeated Aberdeen at Hampden in his manager’s first final.
Rangers had 25 shots but only five were on target. However, their manager said the figures showed the need for greater experience and calmness in the final third. He said: “Earning a place in the final gives this group an invaluable opportunity to build belief by competing for the first piece of silverware of the season.”
McInnes said Rangers had been too slow in the first half before improving after the interval and finding a way through. The manager said: “It is a great feeling.
“Semi-finals are never straightforward, and historically, even highly talented Rangers sides have found them difficult hurdles.
“When you fail to score early and the play is ponderous in the first half, lacking bite and failing to move the ball quickly across the turf, it becomes challenging.”
Derek McInnes gives his verdict after reaching his first final as @RangersFC manager 🔵 "It's actually embarrassing we've had 25 shots and only 5 on target!" 🗣️ #PremierSportsCup https://t.co/RzdbeCB70x

He said: “Producing 25 shots with only five hitting the target reflects inexperience in the forward areas; the team needed an extra pass and better composure in the final third.”
McInnes also praised Kevin Kelsy’s contribution to the winning move. The striker had been close to being replaced by Bojan Miovski before carrying the ball forward. The manager said: “Bojan Miovski was preparing to replace him right before that move.
“Kelsy demonstrated tremendous power and physical presence to carry the ball up the pitch and had the composure to execute the pass rather than rushing the play.”
Rangers will prepare for the final while competition for places increases. McInnes said players’ positions in the team could depend on their performances in the coming fixtures.
He added: “Places in the starting lineup for mid-December are on the line, which should sharpen individual focus across the upcoming fixtures as the team prepares to challenge for the trophy.”
