Martin O’Neill has been a wonderful servant to Celtic over the years, but the time to move on is now.
Defeat to Falkirk means the Hoops have three wins from their last 10 games and no signs of any real improvement.
It is clear from fan sentiment that everyone wants to see a new face in the dugout, with 67 Hail Hail’s TalkingPoints poll proving that the majority want this to end. Yes he is a club legend, but that doesn’t mean the Hoops can’t make hard decisions.
Last season’s league and cup double cemented O’Neill’s place in the Celtic hall of fame as far as everyone was concerned.
He could’ve rode off into the sunset and been replaced with everyone happy. Instead, he agreed to stay on another year and now this Celtic team looks more tired than ever.
Lacking in identity, players seemingly uninspired and high-profile defeats including surrendering a four-goal lead to LASK in the Champions League and two Glasgow derby losses in the space of a week shows this isn’t working.
Sacking the Northern Irishman is a horrible way for it to end, but it has to. Jock Stein, Billy McNeill and Tommy Burns all ended their tenures with a sacking. Has any Celtic fan’s views changed on them? If anything, the love for them has grown.
There are plenty of managers that could replace O’Neill and a change while things are still in their hands may benefit everyone.
There is anger, and rightly so. This hasn’t been good enough. But that feeling won’t last forever. If you truly love something, you sometimes have to let it go. That’s what Celtic need to do with O’Neill.
