South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers exited Saturday's home game against Texas A&M during the second quarter. At halftime, coach Shane Beamer said Sellers had an ankle injury and was getting X-rays.
"We're concerned," Beamer said. He said the Gamecocks had "a lot of confidence" in sophomore backup quarterback Cutter Woods.
Sellers entered the game with 603 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns on the season. South Carolina led the Southeastern Conference entering the game, averaging 217.5 rushing yards per game.
Texas A&M's Bryce Perry-Wright sacked Sellers as he dropped back to pass. The hit forced a fumble, and the Aggies took possession at their own 22 with 5:23 left before halftime.
Before the injury, Sellers completed 10 of 15 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown pass finished an eight-play, 75-yard drive. Sellers threw a screen to wide receiver Mazeo Bennett Jr., who walked in for the 1-yard score.
Transfer defensive tackle Brandon Davis-Swain recovered the fumble on the play that injured Sellers, and Sellers may not return, USA Today's Aggies Wire reported.
Kicker David Olano had put Texas A&M ahead first with a 40-yard field goal, then kicked another after the turnover. South Carolina led 7-6 at halftime.
The Island Packet reported that Texas A&M defensive lineman Sam M'Pemba, listed at 257 pounds, appeared to land on Sellers' left ankle. When trainers arrived, Sellers gestured toward his left leg before limping off the field.
Sellers spent several minutes inside the injury tent before heading to the locker room behind athletic trainers, with just over three minutes remaining before halftime. South Carolina was ahead 7-3 at that point.
Before the game, Texas A&M linebacker Ray Coney said Sellers is "not one of those guys who's going to go down easily." In South Carolina's 44-20 victory over the Aggies in 2024, Sellers rushed for 106 yards and a touchdown. Texas A&M limited him to 28 rushing yards the following season and overcame a 30-3 halftime deficit for a 31-30 win.
No. 21 South Carolina came into Saturday at 5-3, with a 3-3 SEC record and three consecutive wins, including a 45-25 victory at Oklahoma the previous Saturday. Texas A&M entered after its Week 9 bye at 4-4 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The Aggies last won at Williams-Brice Stadium in 2020, by a 48-3 score.
