The Subplot Behind Hearts’ Celtic Park Hammering

Hearts were 2-0 down inside ten minutes at Celtic Park, beaten twice from corners. The man Celtic brought in to work on those routines? The Jambos own set-piece coach from last season, Ross Grant.

By full-time, it was seven. But those first two will have been especially hard to stomach in Gorgie.

Grant, who swapped Tynecastle for Celtic in the summer, watched Martin O’Neill’s side score from two corners inside the opening ten minutes on their way to a 7-1 victory. For a Hearts side who benefited from his set-piece work last season, that was a particularly sore way to begin the afternoon.

Our Celtic on TV guide has every upcoming fixture.

The two corners were well worked, especially Kieran Tierney’s opener where a near post flick on by Liam Scales put it on a plate for the the left-back.

There was another interested party in Grant’s summer move, too.

CeltsAreHere understands Rangers also made a move for the coach, with Derek McInnes keen to take him to Ibrox after working with him at Hearts last season.

Grant ultimately chose Celtic because of his boyhood connections with the club.

Set-piece goals have been few and far between for Celtic this season, so there was plenty to enjoy about seeing two arrive in such quick succession. The opposition made it sweeter.

Grant arrived with a reputation built partly on making Hearts dangerous from dead balls. As we covered when he joined, the Edinburgh side scored 15 league goals directly from corners last season. Celtic brought him in to improve an area that had too often been a source of frustration for supporters.

One afternoon does not settle whether Celtic have made enough progress there. It does, however, show how valuable those goals can be when they arrive early in a big game.

Hearts came to Glasgow hoping for a result. Within ten minutes, they were chasing the match, and Celtic had the freedom to go after them.

The players still had to deliver. They were ruthless and they were also working as a team. There was nobody selfishly looking to beef up their own stats. Everyone was looking for the best way to hurt Hearts. Duran’s dink over to Osman for his second a perfect illustration. Other strikers would have smashed it towards the goal again and hoped for the best.

For Grant, though, those opening ten minutes carried their own satisfaction. Last season, his job was to help Hearts hurt Celtic from set plays. Something they did on the final day of last season when they took the lead at Celtic Park.

On Sunday, Hearts found out how unpleasant it is to be on the other side of his work.
