Leonel Flores: Chelsea and Arsenal ahead of January battle for wonderkid

Arsenal and Chelsea have Leonel Flores on their transfer agenda, and Boca Juniors aren’t in a strong position to stop his potential exit in the winter market.

The 19-year-old’s potential and rise have attracted interest from Arsenal and Chelsea.

Flores has been part of the Argentine club’s youth system since 2014 and made his first team debut in July. Prior to that, he starred for the reserve team this year, managing nine goals and four assists, taking his overall tally to 19 goals and five assists.

His preferred role is on the right wing. Boca Juniors manager Rodolfo Arruabarrena has used him across the front three and also as wing-backs occasionally. Flores has played 1,690 minutes from 29 matches, scoring five goals and contributing three assists.

Arsenal and Chelsea are Flores’ suitors

The youngster’s performances for the club helped him make debut for Argentina’s senior team in September, playing three matches so far.

His rise hasn’t gone unnoticed in England, as El Intransigente states Arsenal and Chelsea have set their sights on Leonel Flores. For now, the two London clubs are monitoring him and their interest stems from his impressive performances this year.

The South American club are well aware their young players continue to draw attention from the European clubs.

Mikel Arteta’s side or the Blues haven’t made advances or submitted an offer yet to sign the versatile player. Boca Juniors will have to take action if there’s a bid from one or both Premier League sides.

Opportunities for Arsenal and Chelsea in January

In May 2025, Leonel Flores signed a contract until December 2029. Boca Juniors president Juan Román Riquelme is aware some of his players are attracting interest from Europe.

Brighton & Hove Albion had looked at him in the summer, without taking the necessary steps to sign him. For now, the Gunners and Xabi Alonso’s side continue to keep a close watch on the Argentina international.

If Arsenal, Chelsea or another club were to table a bid, Boca Juniors ‘will have to evaluate the move and determine the appropriate conditions for a transfer’. This indicates his club aren’t in a comfortable position to block his exit.

It also shows the London clubs have an opportunity to sign Flores in January. There’s no clarity whether either or both will convert their interest into an offer.
