Elgin City land KDM Evolution round-of-32 trip to League 1 Airdrieonians where they won seven years ago on their way to the quarter-finals

It’s a return to a happy hunting ground.

The Black and Whites will make the long midweek journey to the Albert Bartlett Stadium on November 3 or 4.

The sides last met in a pre-season friendly in June, which finished 1-1.

Next month’s rematch will bring back happy memories for some City fans - and one of their players in particular.

Back in 2019, an Elgin team managed by Gavin Price made the very same journey to Airdrie and pulled off a famous victory.

Current striker Kane Hester fired City into the lead with just two minutes to go, and a Shane Sutherland penalty right after landed the north side a place in the last eight.

Russell Dingwall, Brian Cameron and Darryl McHardy played in that match, and like Hester remain in Elgin’s squad to this day.

Elgin had managed an even better result in the previous round when they went to Dundee - who were then in the Championship - and won 2-1.

The Moray outfit’s run eventually ended in the quarter-finals when they lost 3-2 at Raith Rovers in a match televised live.

The present Airdrieonians team finished just above Elgin in the group stages of the KDM with five wins and one defeat to come third and earn a seeded place.

Elgin’s 1-0 defeat at home to Aberdeen B on Tuesday saw them narrowly miss out on the top six and top seeding, denied by a stoppage time East Kilbride strike that pushed them into sixth spot instead.

The draw also threw up a rematch of the final group stages game between former Highland League foes Formartine United and Cove Rangers.

League 1 Cove defeated only Highland League survivors Formartine 2-1 on Tuesday, and the teams will do it again next month at United’s North Lodge Park.

Ross County drew Celtic B at home and Inverness Caley Thistle welcome Montrose to the Highland capital.
