The two glaring weaknesses Scottie Scheffler must address urgently if he is to win a major in 2027

Scottie Scheffler has been far and away the best golfer on the planet for just under four years now, but the scary thing for his rivals is that there is scope for him to become even more dominant.

Scheffler has been ranked as the world’s best player for 180 consecutive weeks, and he has won 22 times on the PGA Tour since February 2022, including four major championships.

In spite of that incredible record, it’s fair to say that the 30-year-old American should have even more major wins to his name. He missed out on a playoff at The Masters this by a single stroke this year.

He was three strokes adrift of forcing a playoff at The Open and four behind eventual US Open champion, Wyndham Clark. There are such fine margins at the very highest level of the game and any other year, he may have won two majors.

TalkingPoints

Who will win the four majors in 2027? We are already dreaming about Thursday at Augusta National!

The same can be said for Scheffler’s PGA Tour season. He won three times, but finished second on five occasions. He lost out in a playoff in two of those runner-up finishes.

Scheffler topped the PGA Tour money list in 2026, winning just over $30 million in the 20 events that he played. The 30-year-old dominated the PGA Tour statistics this year as well, finishing inside the top 10 in all six of the key categories.

However, there is still room for improvement for the 22-time PGA Tour winner. And if he wants to return to the winners’ circle in the majors in 2027, there are two specific areas of his game where he simply has to improve.

The two weaknesses Scottie Scheffler must address if he’s to win a major in 2027

Scheffler’s dominance over the past few years has been underlined by his exceptional ball-striking and improved putting. The 30-year-old’s unrivalled approach play has formed the bedrock of his recent success.

Meanwhile, his consistently brilliant driving has seen him finish inside the top 50 on the PGA Tour in both distance and accuracy – a lethal combination.

His short game is extraordinarily good, while he has now become one of the very best putters in the professional game. However, Scheffler does have his weakness, and two stats in particular highlighted those inadequacies during the 2026 PGA Tour season.

Scheffler was really poor by his standards from the 75-100 yard range on the PGA Tour this year. On average, he hit his shots from this range 19 feet and 7 inches from the hole. That left him ranked 135th on the PGA Tour.

Meanwhile, Scheffler’s bunker play leaves a lot to be desired, by his standards at least. He only got up and down out of the sand 53% of the time in 2026. That left him ranked 61st for the season. In fact, Scheffler has always been a poor bunker player. Over the past seven years on the PGA Tour, he has ranked 61st, 90th, 70th, 169th, 104th, 131st, and 109th respectively in sand saves.

The world number one needs to win at least one major in 2027 if he is to have any chance of getting close to the tallies of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. And if Scottie Scheffler manages to tighten up those two parts of his game during the off-season, he genuinely could be unstoppable next year.
