Mikel Arteta gives latest on Bukayo Saka injury ahead of Everton clash

Arsenal are still waiting to find out how long Bukayo Saka will be out for.

The winger was forced off inside the first 10 minutes of Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich after feeling his left quad while playing a pass. There was no contact, but he was clearly in pain, and Mikel Arteta admitted after the game that it doesn’t look good.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of Saturday’s game against Everton, Arteta revealed that the club still don’t know the full extent of the problem.

Bukayo Saka's injury is a BIG problem for Arsenal 😡 Let's hear your ideas on how they replace him 👇

Bukayo Saka to undergo another MRI scan

“He’s got an MRI this afternoon because he had quite a lot of fluid in the area, so it was difficult to understand the extent of the injury,” Arteta said. “But we’ll know more probably tomorrow.”

Asked whether it was likely to be a minor or more serious muscle injury, Arteta was cautious but far from upbeat. “Again, we need a few more scans and opinions from the specialists,” he said. “Obviously when a player has to walk off the pitch, he’s struggling to walk without any pain, he’s restricted to movement, they are not good signs. So again, let’s be a little bit patient so we can give a definitive assessment and then let you know.”

Either way, Saka will miss Everton at the Emirates on Saturday. After that, Arsenal face Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup, Liverpool at Anfield, Slavia Prague in the Champions League and Hull before the November international break. It may be a safe assumption that Saka will miss all of those games, but time will tell.

In the meantime, with Christos Tzolis also sidelined, Arteta will likely turn to Noni Madueke on the right and Eberechi Eze on the left, with 16-year-old Max Dowman now the first wide option off the bench.
