André Luiz scores on PK and Sporting KC ends season with 1-0 victory over San Diego

SAN DIEGO (AP) — André Luiz scored the lone goal on a penalty kick late in the second half and Stefan Cleveland made it stand up for Sporting Kansas City in a 1-0 Decision Day victory over San Diego FC on Saturday.

Both Sporting KC (7-22-5) and San Diego (9-14-11) had already been eliminated from postseason play.

Luiz gave Sporting KC the lead in the 77th minute, scoring for the eighth time in his first 13 MLS appearances. The PK was awarded after Luiz was fouled by San Diego defender Kieran Sargeant.

Stefan Cleveland stopped four shots on goal for Sporting KC. The 32-year-old finished with two clean sheets through his first 25 starts in the league.

Pablo Sisniega totaled five saves in his sixth start for San Diego this season.

Cleveland had three saves and Sisniega two in a scoreless first half.

San Diego beat Sporting KC 1-0 in Kansas to begin March.
