Brownlie had a short and sweet stint at Swindon, playing under Dennis Wise and scoring a memorable last-minute winner against Barnet.
He only made 15 appearances in his only season in Wiltshire, but it is a time that he remembers fondly, and looks to come back whenever he is in the UK.
It was during that time that his son, Rylan, was born, and he remembered a memorable visit to the Nigel Eady County Ground when speaking to The Adver.
He said: “I absolutely loved my time in Swindon. I thought that the people were beautiful, the town was amazing, and everyone really showed their support.
“It is always on my list when I go back to the UK; I pop in and go and say ‘Hi’ and show my kids where we used to live and where my son was born and things like that.
“People have different opinions of Swindon, but we loved it; Rylan was born there.
“When he was 11, we went back, and we were in the shop buying him a jersey, and the new gaffer came in and asked where we were from, so Rylan said Australia, and he asked, ‘So what are you doing in Swindon?’
“He said, ‘My dad used to play for Swindon’, and then we started talking, and he took us on a walk around the stadium.
“We walked out of the tunnel and Rylan said, ‘Dad, this is what I want to do, and this is where I want to play.’ It reminded me of when I played and gave me goosebumps as I walked through.”
At 19, Rylan Brownlie has enjoyed a strong career so far, playing for Brisbane Roar at 16, going on to make 11 appearances that season before making a switch to the Premier League with Crystal Palace.
After departing Palace this summer, he was searching for a new club, and his father looked into getting him a trial with Swindon, before he ended up in League One with Barnsley.
He said: “We were trying to see if we could get him back there for a trial for a moment, but then the doors opened at Barnsley, and he has settled in really well.
“He is off now, and he’s got his first goal in the cup game and an assist the week before, and made his first start.
“But who knows what the future holds?”
