Harrogate Town v AFC Fylde: Revenge dangles as reward for Simon Weaver's men in FA Cup tie

Simon Weaver has previewed his Harrogate Town side’s FA Cup clash with AFC Fylde

A place in the second round of the FA Cup is not the only reward on offer for Harrogate Town this weekend.

The Sulphurites are no longer an EFL outfit and had to get the better of Bury to secure a place in the first round of the grand old competition.

In their way are fellow National League side AFC Fylde and while a second-round spot is quite the carrot, so to is revenge. This season, the Coasters are the only club to have toppled Harrogate on their home turf in North Yorkshire.

Craig Mahon’s men ran out as 2-1 winners back in September and Harrogate boss Simon Weaver wants to see things “put right”.

Harrogate Town out to put things right

“We lost on that occasion and we'd like to put that right,” he said. “But I think, regardless of who we're playing against, we've had a great home record, scoring 26 goals from nine games.

“I repeat that to the players because it's something to be proud of. It's real forward momentum at home, so we've got to keep it going.

“We didn't like the outcome when we lost at home to Fylde but it was a very closely-fought game. It'll be a battle on Saturday. Obviously, it's a one-off game of the FA Cup, so it brings with it emotion and a real desire to get through to the next round.”

Front-footed styles

Harrogate and Fylde sit second and fourth in the fifth-tier table and both favour a front-footed approach. The FA Cup meeting between them, therefore, could be quite the spectacle.

“I think both teams commit to a certain style of play,” said Weaver. “So there's that familiarity of both individuals and the style of play.

“But it's going to be a difficult game. We want to start on the front foot again, like we did last time. We could have had a penalty after 30 seconds.

“Perhaps that incident happened a bit too early to be given. I don't know, but we were proud of the performance, not the outcome, but proud of the performance that night.”
