No. 4 Ohio State ended No. 5 Indiana’s 22-game winning streak with a 19-15 win in Bloomington on Saturday, and Julian Sayin watched the finish from the sideline with his right arm in a sling. Head coach Ryan Day said afterward that his quarterback will likely miss several weeks.
Sayin’s 38-yard touchdown pass to Jeremiah Smith on fourth down early in the fourth quarter put Ohio State up 19-7. Indiana pulled within 19-15 with 10:30 left.
On the Buckeyes’ next possession, Sayin was hit from his right side as he went to throw, and his arm was pinned awkwardly against his body. He fumbled on the sack, Ohio State recovered, and he soon headed to the locker room favoring the arm.
Freshman Luke Fahey took it from there. He went 0-for-2 as Ohio State leaned on the run, and the Buckeyes survived when Nick Marsh’s apparent go-ahead touchdown catch with 1:02 left was ruled out of bounds. Sayin finished 15-of-29 for 235 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Speaking with Fox Sports’ Jenny Taft on the field after the game, Day didn’t play it down. “Obviously, that was a big blow to us, but the rest of the team picked it up for us,” he told her.
Day offered a rough timeline when he met reporters later. He said he did not “have a ton of details,” but Sayin would likely be out several weeks.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel relayed the news: “Update on Ohio State star QB Julian Sayin, who will miss several weeks.”
The loss of Sayin, a junior who finished fourth in last season’s Heisman Trophy voting, could have a significant impact on Ohio State’s run to the postseason. For some, however, the reaction to the news had nothing to do with the playoff picture. It was about the player.
Some kept it simple. “Hoping he’s okay,” one person wrote in reply to Thamel.
Another person echoed the sentiment, writing “hopefully he’s alright.”
Saturday’s result was a top-five road win over the defending national champions, but one fan tied it to the injury: “Ohio State gets the win today but at what cost?”
The schedule gives Ohio State some breathing room, and a few responses were quick to point it out. The Buckeyes are off next Saturday before they visit USC on Oct. 31. “Luckily they have a bye next week, gives them time to get Luke Fahey ready,” one fan wrote.
Another reply called the bye well timed and urged the Buckeyes to get the backup ready. A third pointed to the program’s reputation for elite quarterback rooms.
Exactly how long Sayin will be out is unclear. Day gave no diagnosis and no firmer timeline on Saturday, and who starts at USC remains an open question. “We’ll have to come up with a plan there,” he said, according to On3.
