Springboks ignite Irish row as Rassie Erasmus goes public after investigation

Rassie Erasmus has reignited his criticism of rugby's disciplinary processes after Tadhg Furlong was cleared of alleged foul play, with Munster also issuing a pointed response to the public commentary surrounding the controversial case.

The Springboks head coach took to social media on Friday after an independent United Rugby Championship disciplinary committee dismissed a citing complaint against Ireland and Leinster prop Furlong.

Furlong had been accused of grabbing Munster forward Gavin Coombes in the groin area during the sides' meeting on Saturday, October 24. However, a three-person disciplinary panel unanimously dismissed the complaint on Thursday, October 29, meaning Furlong is free to play and remains available for Ireland's upcoming Nations Championship fixtures, including the clahs against South Africa.

Reacting to the outcome, Erasmus posted on X: "Back to Boardrooms again. It's so sick! ....... I am so proud being [South African]. I wonder if they are proud. I wonder if they really sleep well tonight.

"The saddest is everyone know [sic] this was going to happen."

His comments come against the backdrop of his previous criticism of the disciplinary process after Springboks forward Jan-Hendrik Wessels received a nine-match suspension in October 2025 for a similar incident involving Connacht's Josh Murphy.

Wessels was found guilty of grabbing Murphy in the groin area during a URC match, with his suspension ruling him out of the Springboks' November internationals.

Erasmus reacted at the time by posting: "It just got tougher!! We now have to beat them on the field. And in the boardrooms........"

Munster statement

Meanwhile, Munster have issued a statement confirming their continued support for Coombes while appearing to criticise the public interventions made during the disciplinary process.

The club said: "Munster Rugby acknowledges the decision published on Thursday night by the Independent Disciplinary Committee.

"Gavin Coombes continues to have the full backing of the club."

Interim chief executive Avan Lee also made clear his frustration with commentary surrounding the case, suggesting that influential figures should have allowed the proceedings to run their course.

He said: "The priority this week was to back Gavin and for the club to stand behind him, and that position has not changed.

"We believe it is important that independent disciplinary proceedings are allowed to conclude without unhelpful commentary from people with a clear influence over public perception.

"Respect for that process, and consideration for everyone directly involved should be paramount."

Lee's comments come after a number of prominent rugby figures, including former Ireland captain Johnny Sexton, publicly defended Furlong before the disciplinary hearing had taken place.

The committee, comprising Simon Thomas of Wales, South Africa's Attie Heyns and Scotland's Pamela Woodman, concluded that Furlong had not committed an act of foul play under Law 9.27 after reviewing video footage.

It also stressed that Coombes had given an honest account of his recollection of the incident and that the complaint had been properly brought before the committee.
