The New England Patriots suffered a 30-24 loss to the Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football, dropping to 4-3 this season. Beyond the defeat, wide receiver A.J. Brown’s struggles have become another storyline for the Patriots.
Brown has found it difficult to make an impact since returning from a right high-ankle sprain that kept him out for four games. His recent performances have raised questions about whether he fits into New England’s offensive system.
Brown had three catches for 48 yards on six targets against the Bears, but he also failed to secure a deep pass along the left sideline. Brown struggled against the New York Jets in Week 6 as well, finishing with three catches for 27 yards on 10 targets while committing multiple drops.
Speaking on “Say What Needs To Be Said,” former Patriots cornerback and two-time Super Bowl champion Asante Samuel questioned whether Brown is a good fit for the team’s system.
“A.J. Brown, he was a non-factor in this game against the Chicago Bears. I just have to admit it, this isn’t the system for him. This isn’t the system for A.J. Brown to thrive in,” Samuel said.
He added, “There is no role for A.J. Brown in this system if he can’t create the separation that he needs to create, or make the plays that Mike Vrabel expects him to make.”
Samuel also pointed out that forcing the ball to Brown could disrupt third-year quarterback Drake Maye’s rhythm. “Most of the time when A.J. Brown is targeted, the ball is being forced to him, and it’s stopping Drake Maye from playing quarterback,” he said.
Samuel suggested that the Patriots should give more opportunities to wide receiver Demario “Pop” Douglas instead.
Brown has recorded nine receptions for 101 yards, averaging 11.2 yards per catch, with no touchdowns in three games this season.
Despite his limited production, the veteran receiver remains confident in his abilities.
“I’m a vet. I understand how the game goes. It’s just how the game is,”Brown said. “I know the type of player I am, and I know that’s always the case. Every time I line up, I get a lot of attention, so teams try to take me away.”
The extra coverage could create opportunities for other New England receivers, but the Patriots will need to find a better way to involve Brown without disrupting Maye’s rhythm.
The Patriots will have a chance to regroup before facing the Miami Dolphins in their next AFC East matchup.
