Steven McLean Handed Celtic Appointment After Fir Park Penalty Error

Steven McLean will referee Celtic’s Premiership match against Dundee United on Wednesday, following confirmation that the Hoops should have received a penalty during his previous Celtic league assignment.

The SFA confirmed McLean takes charge at Celtic Park for the 7.45pm kick-off, with Martin O’Neill’s side looking to build on Sunday’s victory over Hibs.

His last Celtic league match was the 2-0 win over Motherwell at Fir Park on October 11.

That afternoon, Callum McGregor’s shot struck Lukas Fadinger’s arm inside the penalty area, but Celtic were awarded only a corner.

McLean did not give the penalty, while video assistant referee Don Robertson did not recommend an on-field review.

Scottish FA head of refereeing Willie Collum subsequently confirmed that the officials had reached the wrong outcome.

Celtic collected all three points despite the missed decision, but the incident required both the referee and VAR to reach a different conclusion.

Wednesday brings McLean back into a Celtic league fixture shortly after that assessment became public.

Dundee United arrive after beating Aberdeen 3-2 at Tannadice, a result that extended their unbeaten sequence to five matches and lifted them into fourth place.

Celtic will want a more controlled performance than they produced at Easter Road, where Camilo Durán’s first-half strike proved enough to secure a 2-1 victory.
