Manchester United rebel Lisandro Martínez will be available for selection against Leeds on Sunday after publicly apologising for his scathing attack on Jason Wilcox, the club’s director of football, and the Old Trafford board.
Martínez was summoned to a meeting with Wilcox, Omar Berrada, the United chief executive and Michael Carrick, the manager, after training on Thursday afternoon.
Old Trafford officials were keeping tight-lipped on Thursday night about what disciplinary action had been taken against the Argentina defender after he criticised the club’s transfer dealings and a perceived lack of accountability at the top of the club. His comments came directly after Tuesday’s 2-0 defeat by Atlético Madrid.
But Telegraph Sport understands Martínez has been cleared to face Leeds at Elland Road this weekend after informing the club he wanted to apologise for his outburst.
Martínez said in a statement on his Instagram that the “frustration” of losing to Atlético had led him to lash out “and express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologise.”
He described the meeting as “a very positive conversation, where we were able to exchange views and speak openly about what happened after Tuesday’s game”.
“Our club is at its best when we are all united, and I recognise that my words in that moment did not help with that,” Martínez added.
