Buendia starts, Barkley call - Aston Villa starting XI vs Newcastle predicted

Aston Villa are targeting their second win of the Premier League season when they take on Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Unai Emery’s side come into the match on the back of a 6-0 thrashing of Fenerbahce in the Champions League, which secured Villa’s first home victory of the campaign.

On the road, Villa have won their last three matches in all competitions, against Club Brugge, Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur, scoring three goals in each victory.

Newcastle, meanwhile, conceded four goals in an away defeat to Coventry last Monday but are unbeaten at home this season, having beaten West Brom and Hull and drawn with Liverpool and Bournemouth.

Villa boss Emery will provide a team news update at his pre-match press conference at Bodymoor Heath but is expected to be without left-backs Ian Maatsen and Matteo Ruggeri.

George Hemmings and Brian Madjo could both be included in the matchday squad, with the former having been nursing a minor knee injury since domestic football resumed following the extended international break.

Zion Suzuki will start in goal for Villa, likely behind an unchanged back four of Matty Cash, Victor Lindelof, Pau Torres and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Boubacar Kamara could be partnered by Joao Gomes in the double pivot, despite Ross Barkley’s brace against Fenerbahce, with Emery potentially preferring a different profile of player for the trip to St James’ Park.

John McGinn and Johan Manzambi will support Nicolas Jackson, leaving one attacking slot to be filled. Ibrahim Mbaye impressed against Fenerbahce and poses a significant threat on the counter-attack, but Emery may favour Emi Buendia’s experience and familiarity with his system for this tricky away fixture.

Buendia also scored a stunning opener against Newcastle last season, as Villa claimed their first win on Tyneside in 20 years.

Predicted Villa XI: Suzuki; Cash, Lindelof, Torres, Wan-Bissaka; Kamara, Gomes; McGinn, Manzambi, Buendia; Jackson.
