Mikel Merino wants Arsenal to go for both the Champions League and Premier League this season

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino insists the Gunners want to "win everything" after encouraging his team-mates to go for the jugular in the Champions League this season.

Mikel Arteta's Premier League champions fell narrowly short in Europe last term, losing on penalty kicks to Luis Enrique's PSG in Budapest.

Now Merino wants Arsenal to change their story, explaining after the 3-0 victory over Lille which was the club's 14th straight group stage win in the competition: "Yeah, absolutely [it gives Arsenal belief]. Unbelievable run.

"We know that we're making history in the competition. At the same time, we know how difficult it is to win games. We give a lot of value and credit to the team for what we're doing.

"And obviously the goal and the objective is to win the Champions League, to win the Premier League, to win everything. That's what the manager wants, that's what the fans want and the players as well."

When asked if that's something the Gunners can achieve, he added: "Absolutely. This is the mentality. This is the aim. We were so so close last season. That proved to us that we are ready for it and now it's about details, about being present and ready in the right moments. Of course we believe that."

Earlier this week, Gabriel Magalhaes, who missed the decisive spot-kick in Hungary, also outlined his desire to win the biggest prize in club football, stating: "We are very motivated, and we want to attack every trophy and tomorrow we will have another opportunity to win in the Champions League, and play at home, and we are ready to go."

Gabriel also added that he would not hesitate to take another penalty if he's presented with an opportunity to do so.

Arteta does not feel his side are a million miles away from their goal, either, telling TNT Sports earlier this week: "When you come to the Champions League final without losing a single match, winning almost every game, being so dominant and then losing the Champions League final for one penalty, one action, what can I say about the team and what they did?

"We were the closest we have ever been to making history for this football club, and that penalty's a lottery. Hopefully, we can play that lottery again and win it.

"The happiest thing, the thing we can do to be the happiest, is to win football matches. That's the best medicine for everybody.

"The best fitness coach in the world is winning, winning, winning and winning. And when that's the case, everyone will participate, they will be feeling important, and it will be in your spirit."

Thousands of Arsenal fans upgraded their matchday last season. This is how they did it.
