Sportsnet Insider Elliotte Friedman revealed in his latest edition of his 32 Thoughts column that the Stanley Cup Champion Carolina Hurricanes attempted to offer sheet Simon Edvinsson before turning around and trading the defenseman.

The offer came through when Steve Yzerman was still in charge of the Red Wings, and according to Friedman has not been revisited in the four months following Yzerman’s dismissal. With Carolina now having re-signed Alexander Nikishin to a one year deal, one does wonder if they tried to make a similar offer to Edvinsson over the summer to suggest that was the market rate the Red Wings were looking at to muddy the waters of contract negotiations.

A month into the season however, and the Red Wings have been unable to sign the big Swedish blueliner, with the situation seemingly reaching a tipping point and Edvinsson reportedly now preferring a trade out of Detroit.

With November beginning hopefully tempers will cool alongside the weather. The Red Wings are on the road for much of the first half of the month, and will have plenty of opportunity to scout around the league in the meanwhile.

Todd McLellan’s Red Wings will have back to back games to start the week in Florida, starting with the Florida Panthers tonight at 7 P.M. The Panthers and Lightning currently sit three points above the Red Wings in the standings with 18 apiece, making this an important road trip for Detroit in the division.

Two victories, and they’re ahead, or tied with both teams. Two losses, and they’ll be five points behind the middle of the Atlantic.

Red Wings Extra

Red Wings prospect JP Hurlbert got his second goal of the season last night in the University of Michigan’s second game against Ohio State University this weekend. Hurlbert’s goal in the second period to put Michigan up 2-1 was the first lead the team had held in the back to back series with OSU.

Hurlbert and the Wolverines would go on to win the matchup 5-4 in overtime. The 2026 first round pick has been playing mostly on the fourth line, but perhaps an uptick in his production like from last night will earn the young winger some more playing time on a loaded U of M roster.
