‘Al Michaels Needs To Retire,’ ‘Lost His Fastball’ — NFL Fans React to Veteran Broadcaster’s ‘Horrible’ Call on Patriots RB Rhamondre Stevenson’s 48-Yard TD

The New England Patriots made an improbably mind-blowing play to end the first half of their highly anticipated Week 7 clash against the Chicago Bears. With just three seconds remaining in the first half, the Patriots had the ball at the Chicago 48-yard line.

Rather than settle for a knee or try a Hail Mary, they drew up a nearly perfect catch-and-run from Rhamondre Stevenson to score a touchdown with 00s on the clock. However, fans were left extremely disappointed when Al Michaels failed to provide the right level of excitement on the play.

Fans Annoyed at Al Michaels for Lackluster Commentary Effort in Patriots vs. Bears

The 48-yard touchdown, which saw Stevenson gain nearly all of the yardage after the catch, was entirely improbable and drew comparisons to Tyreek Hill’s infamous play against the Dallas Cowboys.

The Patriots, who could have been down 20-7 going into the break, with the Bears receiving the kickoff to open the second half, no less, were suddenly right back in the game at 20-14.

But Michaels’ work in the booth left a lot to be desired. Throughout the sequence, he seemed weirdly detached and only truly showed excitement in the final five yards before the endzone, which also died soon after.

“Maye, gonna flip this one here to Stevenson. Looks behind him, looks for maybe someone to lateral to,” he opened, before excitedly adding, “Look at him, look at him go.”

However, that excitement died soon after, as he dispassionately finished, “Can you believe this? Touchdown.”

For a man famous for making legendary calls, like the Miracle on Ice or the earthquake-interrupted 1989 World Series game, it was a shocking lack of enthusiasm that fans immediately noticed.

“Al Michaels has lost his fastball,” one fan commented, a scathing indictment of a broadcaster who was famous for his quickness and wit throughout his career.

“Al Michaels needs to retire,” another fan called out, with a fan co-signing the idea, arguing, “Listen to Al Michaels here and tell me he should still have a job.”

One fan called him a “horrible announcer,” while another fan added, “Al Michaels is awful, man, what is this call?”

A Jacksonville Jaguars fan was extremely annoyed, claiming, “Al Michaels literally just made an amazing play sound boring as [expletive]. Get his old [expletive] off, bruh. Travis Hunter finna make a one-handed catch, and he’s gonna say, ‘Nice play.'”

The sheer brilliance of the play not being recognized properly led one fan to call out, “Scores the craziest last-second touchdown in years, and all that Al Michaels can muster up is ‘Look at him go.'”

One fan concluded, “Al Michaels with the absolute worst call on an extremely exciting play you’ll ever hear.”

Michaels’ subdued call also adds to the scrutiny surrounding his broadcasting performance through the first half of the season, with viewers repeatedly questioning his energy in the booth.

With announcers constantly under scrutiny these days, some fans have to be wondering whether the ongoing pushback against him will prompt Amazon Prime to make a change in the commentary booth sooner rather than later.
