John Eustace says he will have to "wait and see" if he is still in charge of Derby County for Friday's game against Bolton but insisted he is "no quitter" following their defeat to Norwich.
Pressure is mounting on Derby's head coach after they were swept aside by the Canaries as they secured a 4-0 victory that came three days after Eustace's side lost 4-1 to Millwall. Norwich took a three-goal lead into the half-time break as goals from Anthony Musaba, Paris Maghoma and Dalin Yongwa put them in command, sparking a chorus of jeers at the interval.
Jovon Makama then wrapped up the victory in the second half, with the players then being booed by every section of the ground as they went to thank them for their support at full-time. Speaking to the written press after the game and asked if he will be in charge on Friday, Eustace said: "We'll have to wait and see.
"The club's much bigger than me. I've said that all the great work that we've done over the last 15/16 months is something that I've been very proud of.
"It's not easy to come to this football club and do what we did with the best finish in seven years and the progression of the assets we've created here. Not to continue that throughout the summer and up to now has been tough and listen it is football. It is an industry where it's about results, and to lose 4-0 at home after losing 4-1 at the weekend is not what we want, and it's not acceptable.
"No matter what excuses you want to make, it's my head on the table but we'll crack on."
Derby's miserable start to the season comes just five months after Eustace guided Derby to the cusp of the play-offs and that was the season after he retained their Championship status when they were seven points adrift with 11 games to go.
Asked how the club has gone from chasing promotion to another potential relegation fight given they are seven points adrift of safety already, Eustace responded: "You'll have to ask the people who've made the decisions, I suppose. Listen, I take full responsibility for the performances.
"The performances haven't been at the level, and ultimately you can make as many excuses as you want with injuries, suspensions and whatever, but I get judged on results, and the results haven't been good.
"But it hurts. I'm a very proud person, and the amount of work that we put in to get the club to a certain position, I think people take things for granted sometimes and just expect that 'oh it will just carry on and carry on' but the Championship's relentless, it's ruthless, and if you don't keep going and keep building, doing things properly, then sometimes it can pinch you on the backside.
"We've got a lot of injuries as well and we have to respect that fact as well. I'm a very proud person, and it's very frustrating at the moment, but I'm not a quitter.
"I know that we can get more out of the group and it's something that we'll keep trying to do."
