Lille president Olivier Létang has been handed a four-month ban on appeal by the French FA’s Executive Committee, L’Equipe reports. On August 28, Létang ranted about the referee’s performance during Les Dogues‘ home Ligue 1 draw against PSG. The back-to-back UEFA Champions League winners snatched an unlikely 2-2 draw after scoring two goals in the dying minutes, including one behind the allocated injury-time.
After the final whistle, Létang was heard shouting to the referee that it was a scnadal. He then sent an e-mail to Ligue 1 referees’ chief Antony Gautier in which he wrote that he had raised concerns before the PSG game about Lille’s history with referee Eric Wattellier. Létang even requested that Wattelier no longer referee games involving Lille, and implied that if he did, Davide Ancelotti’s team might not play the game.
In September, LFP’s Disciplinary Committee initially handed Létang a €20,000 fine, but the French FA appealed the decision as it considered the punishment way too lenient. On Thursday, they handed the Lille OSC president a way more severe six-month ban, two suspended. In a statement sent to L’Equipe, LOSC said they will pursue all necessary legal avenues to reverse the French FA’s ruling. Lille play Rennes away on Sunday.
