Premier League Power Rankings: Have slumping Manchester United hit rock bottom?

Trying to make sense of the 2026-27 Premier League season has been very hard so far.

There are basically a couple of teams better than everyone else, a couple of teams who are struggling badly, and then all the other teams are just in one big pile in the middle slugging it out.

It is magnificent to watch. But tough to figure it all out.

Below we reveal our latest Premier League Power Rankings as we try to bring some clarity to the chaos.

Premier League Power Rankings

20. Sunderland - A pummeling at Coventry underlined the huge concerns about squad depth and a lack of clinical finishing as the slim margins have now turned against them. The Black Cats are in big trouble and Regis Le Bris is having a really difficult time rotating the squad with European action taking a big toll on creativity and zip.

19. Manchester United - One league win all season and despite playing well at Chelsea they crumbled after conceding and then imploded with Martinez’s red card. Carrick’s on borrowed time but he isn’t the main problem. Star attackers are underperforming. Massively. A tough run of games coming up too, as it will likely get a lot worse.

Martinez proved 'he doesn't care' about Man United

Rebecca Lowe, Robbie Earle, and Tim Howard react to Chelsea's 2-0 win over Manchester United, which saw Lisandro Martinez get sent off in the second half in the midst of another poor performance.

18. Crystal Palace - Pierre Sage has been handed the dreaded vote of confidence but Palace are making so many defensive mistakes and have no edge or directness about them. Europe is stretching this squad too far and Sage is scrambling for answers.

17. Nottingham Forest - Oliver Glasner’s passionate rant after the latest defeat said it all. Forest would sit third in the league if games were decided by xG. But they’re not and there is so much pressure on Liam Delap to deliver.

16. Leeds United - A great start to the season has fizzled out a bit, with Leeds struggling for creativity and they’ve drawn five of their nine games. Daniel Farke is doing a great job but he needs to release the handbrake a little.

15. Hull City - The Tigers are scrapping away and are horrible to play against. The new boys have a tough run of games coming up in the next month, so we are about to see if they’re for real or just enjoying a promotion bounce.

14. Newcastle United - What a strange team the Magpies are. They are giving up big chances defensively and they aren’t looking great in attack. That’s not a great combo. After a decent start to the season it is getting ugly quickly for Matthias Jaissle and he may start using some of his new signings more.

Everton take down Newcastle, soar to 7th in table

Cara Banks, Robbie Earle, and Danny Higginbotham react to Everton's impressive 1-0 win over Newcastle at St. James' Park to go up to seventh in the table after Matchweek 9.

13. Fulham - Alvaro Arbeloa’s side actually play some lovely stuff and they’re starting to rack up some points now. Finally. But the Cottagers still feel quite fragile and they have a very tough run of games coming up.

12. Ipswich Town - Gary O’Neil’s side have won the games they should have so far, which has them in a great spot. They will always be in games and a bit more composure in the final third will see the new boys continue to surprise most people. They recruited very well over the summer.

11. Coventry City - Another newbie winning the games they should and Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues have found some confidence in front of goal. Three wins from their last five shows they’re finding their feet, but their next four games will tell us if they’re going to stay above the relegation scrap.

10. Everton - Same old story for the Toffees as they’re so solid defensively but keep failing to put away big chances. If they could finish more and get Thierno Barry some extra help, they would be pushing for the top five. David Moyes is still doing a fine job with the resources at his disposal and a top 10 finish seems likely.

9. Brentford - Such a fun, chaotic team to watch and the Bees sum up what’s great about the Premier League. They are so clever with the little things they focus on to close the gaps to the big boys and Keith Andrews’ side look set for another European push. It’s remarkable.

Jacquet is 'a Rolls-Royce' in Liverpool's defense

Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe explain why Liverpool's Jeremy Jacquet is their underappreciated performer of the week following another standout performance in the center of the Reds' defense against Arsenal.

8. Liverpool - It’s one step forward, half a step back for Andoni Iraola’s side at the moment. In attack they’re showing big signs of improvement but their home defeat against Arsenal showed they must become more clinical if they’re going to have an outside chance of winning the title. Given their squad, they are slightly underperforming but the new intense style of play is getting there.

7. Chelsea - Very much a work in progress but they’re still fourth in the table and have had plenty of key injuries to deal with. Xabi Alonso has a clear idea and playing style and Chelsea’s players appear to be now getting the balance right defensively while still being a threat in attack. Morgan Rogers has been sublime, while Joao Pedro needs to return from injury quickly.

Takeaways from Chelsea's victory over Man United

Joe Prince-Wright reacts to Chelsea picking up all three points against the red Devils at Stamford Bridge and shares his thoughts on Lisandro Martinez's red and Michael Carrick's future.

6. Manchester City - Two-straight defeats is an almighty slump for City and Enzo Maresca’s side are a little all over the place. They are rotating heavily and that is impacting their rhythm a little, while at the back they take massive risks on the ball and can be countered quite easily. The last few weeks have been a wake-up call.

5. Bournemouth - The Cherries have exploded into life with Marco Rose a happy man. Five wins in a row in all competitions without conceding is incredible and Bournemouth’s high-pressing is mesmerizing and rattles opponents. They are probably favorites to win the Europa League. Think about that.

4. Tottenham Hotspur - Now Roberto De Zerbi has Spurs cooking. Three-straight league wins for the first time in almost two years says it all and after failing to take chances early in the season Spurs have finally found a clinical edge. They are only just getting started and have no European action to worry about. They will continue to climb the table.

Cash: Villa 'looking really good' after slow start

Joe Prince-Wright catches up with Aston Villa defender Matty Cash to discuss what it's like going up against the Premier League's most dynamic attackers, Aston Villa's start to the season, and more.

3. Aston Villa - Unai Emery has Villa surging again and it is so exciting to see so many new players begin to thrive together in his system. Jackson, Manzambi, Suzuki and Alysson are all bringing something new to Villa and they have figured out things at the back.

2. Brighton - The Seagulls have already beaten Arsenal (3-0) and Man City (1-0) this season and they are the real deal under Fabian Hurzeler. They press high, make it so uncomfortable for opponents and their squad depth is superb. They aren’t too focused on the Conference League because finishing in the top five has to be their main aim this season. They can do it.

1. Arsenal - Mikel Arteta’s defensive juggernaut suffered one slip up at Brighton but aside from that it has been smooth sailing. Yes, the League Cup defeat to Fleetwood Town on penalty kicks was historic but it happens when you rotate and the magic of the cup pops up. The Gunners have conceded just five goals through almost a quarter of the season. Even if their attack isn’t firing on all cylinders, their decision to double down on experienced defensive additions (Konsa, Bruno Guimaraes) is proving yet another masterful decision.

Arsenal's 'winning mentality' shines at Anfield

Rebecca Lowe, Robbie Earle, and Tim Howard react to Arsenal's historic win over Liverpool at Anfield to go clear at the top of the table after Matchweek 9.
