Alan Shearer wants to see more experience arrive at St James' Park before the transfer window closes

Newcastle United were 'burnt' by last summer's transfer window disaster - but must not allow that experience to leave Matthias Jaissle short of crucial Premier League experience this season.

That's the verdict of United legend Alan Shearer, who has seen the Magpies swap establshed stars for exciting new talent in the last few weeks.

Newcastle have signed five new players so far, with all bar goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek aged 20 or younger. Aladji Bamba, Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure are 20, with Sean Steur only 18.

It has heralded a new chapter in the club's development, and while Shearer understands why the club have adopted this polcy, he feels some experience is badly needed in the squad.

United have been linked with a move for former Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg as they look to offer Jaissle some stability in midfield, and Shearer insists getting that balance right will be crucial.

"I have no problem with Newcastle going out and buying now and I think I understand why they've done that this window," he told Betfair.

"I think Newcastle were burnt with what happened last preseason. One with losing Isak and two with the money spent and the lack of quality coming in.

"That might change. Wissa might come out and be a different person, a different player. Woltemade might be very different under a new manager and working with someone else and with a different way of playing.

"So, we'll have to judge that when we see it. But it's I guess they didn't want to get stung again. And I understand why they're going for young, hungry players. They've spent a lot of money on Lewis Hall when they signed him, that was a lot of money.

"When they signed Livramento, that was a lot of money. So, I guess they're looking at particularly those two and thinking we've got two good assets on our hands, and that's the way they're going now.

"I do think we need a bit of experience in that squad. And even look at what Chelsea have done with Welbeck and with Henderson. The reason they've done that is because they need the experience to manage the dressing room.

"And I know we've got a couple of players like that in there with Dan Burn and one or two others. But I do think there's still a lot of work to be done for Newcastle in the transfer market in between now and the end of the window."

Newcastle are expected to be busy in the final weeks of the season, with up to four players potentially targetted.

They are currently pursuing a replacement for Bruno Guimaraes in midfield, while they need cover in the full-back positions, with only Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall currently in the first-team squad.

Jaissle wants to judge his squad before making any recruitment decisions, but a new striker and right-sided forward could be on the agenda.
