Newcastle United urged to follow Mikel Arteta example amid Matthias Jaissle critics

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle deserves 'a bit of time' to try and implement his ideas on Tyneside after a mixed start to his reign at St James' Park.

That is the view of former Magpies forward Duncan Ferguson, who believes Newcastle need to only look at the examples of Mikel Arteta at Arsenal and Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United to see that patience can lead to success.

Jaissle has picked up eight points from his opening seven Premier League matches and has also guided United to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

But criticism of how open Newcastle's midfield and how easy they are to play through reared their head in back-to-back defeats to Coventry City and Aston Villa last week and the worrying trends that were brimming underneath a positive start to the season have now risen to the surface.

Newcastle need to show a response on Sunday when they make the trip to face a struggling Crystal Palace side or pressure may just start to grow on their new head coach.

It must be said that Jaissle got the job with less than three weeks before the start of the season, though, succeeding one of the club's most successful modern managers in Eddie Howe, and inherited a team that had lost four of their senior players in the transfer window and had replaced them with eight players aged 24 or under.

Ferguson feels that Jaissle deserves time to get his messages across and believes Arsenal and Manchester United have shown how that patience can be rewarded.

"I like Eddie Howe. He was a great, great manager. Done a lot of things, got a lot of experience," Ferguson, who has just been appointed as head coach of Northern Irish side Glentoran, told GiveMeSport.

"Look, you just got to give managers a bit of time, haven't you? End of the day, I know nobody gets time now, a few bad results, and before you know it...

"Look what happened to Mikel at Arsenal. They gave him a bit of time. Look what happened to Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United. They gave him a bit of time. Give the managers a bit of time. That's all we need."
