Bayern Munich assistant hints at Michael Olise backup plan as Vincent Kompany talks planned
Michael Olise is sent off

Bayern Munich will be without Michael Olise when they lock horns with Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night.

Aaron Danks has challenged the Bayern Munich players to 'step up and show their character and ability' in the absence of Michael Olise. The 24-year-old winger will miss Wednesday night's clash against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena due to suspension, having been shown a second yellow card during last week's draw to Viking.

Shortly after Luis Diaz fired the Bavarians into the lead, Olise was cautioned twice in quick succession. As the Norwegian outfit looked to mount a counter-attack, the France international tugged the shirt of Zlatko Tripic, earning himself a booking.

Bizarrely, as the referee brandished the yellow card, Olise threw the ball into the face of the Viking winger, whom he had just fouled. The former Crystal Palace star was immediately cautioned again and given his marching orders.

Despite hopes that the Video Assistant Referee would overturn the decision, the on-field call was eventually upheld, and Olise was escorted to the dressing room. The Frenchman must now serve a one-match ban in the UEFA Champions League, subsequently ruling him out for the clash against Mikel Arteta's side.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Bayern Munich assistant coach was asked how he plans to compensate for Olise's absence. Danks, who was covering for the ill Vincent Kompany, said: I haven't thought much about that at the moment.

"I was focused on getting the team prepared and ready. We'll speak with Vincent later. Lenny [Karl] is one of many who could come into the team in these moments.

"At a big club like Bayern, we have a fantastic squad, great attacking players. Obviously, we'll miss Michael, but it's also an opportunity for someone else to step up and show their character and ability. We'll see."

Kompany's right-hand man added: "For us, it's about imposing our style of play on the game. We have to trust our habits, our principles and what we do.

"We know Arsenal are a fantastic defensive team. It'll be a high-level game. You have to be prepared for everything with them because they're very well coached."

Serge Gnabry was also quizzed by reporters on Olise's suspension. Singing from the same hymn sheet, the Bayern Munich winger said: "We just try to win the match.

"Michael is a very important player in our team who performs incredibly well. But a team is always prepared for the possibility of someone missing a game. We just have to give it our all tomorrow."

Gnabry spent five years at Arsenal, making his Premier League debut at 17, before returning to Germany. On facing his former club, the 31-year-old said: "It's always a special game against a former club.

"I grew up there and I'm really looking forward to it. We last played at the Emirates. It's a bit strange to play against a coach you used to play with.

"We want to win, that's what it's all about. I'm looking forward to the game."
