Former England forward David Ribbans is just 11 days away from becoming eligible to represent South Africa, with Springboks boss Rassie Erasmus already confirming his interest.

The 31-year-old Toulon lock, who won 11 caps for England, will complete his three-year international stand-down period on 27 October.

And that date could prove significant.

Ribbans last represented England against Argentina in the bronze-medal match at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Born in Somerset West, South Africa, the towering forward could represent the country of his birth, subject to approval under World Rugby's eligibility regulations.

RUCK has previously highlighted Ribbans among the former England internationals who could switch nations ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

With the tournament approaching, Springboks boss Erasmus has already admitted the former Northampton Saints star is on his radar.

Rassie Erasmus confirms interest

The Springboks boss previously revealed that Ribbans was among the players being considered.

“We are also looking at someone like David Ribbans, not that they must get their hopes up,” Erasmus said.

But the biggest question might not be whether South Africa want him.

It could be whether Ribbans wants to make the switch.

Speaking to The Telegraph in April 2025, the former Northampton Saints forward left the door slightly open.

“You never say never with these things and South Africa was my home originally, but England has become my second home and I was super proud to play for them.”

However, there was a catch.

Ribbans admitted he had reservations about representing two different countries.

“I find it a bit strange when players play for two countries,” he explained.

He added: “This is no slight on the Springboks, who are an amazing team. It's just my view and I'm a bit stubborn in it. I'd put aside the potential glory for that because it wouldn't be right towards England.”

Those comments suggest Erasmus might have some convincing to do.

RUCK has previously explored Ribbans' potential switch, with the lock admitting the prospect of representing two nations felt strange.

For now, no change of international allegiance has been confirmed.

Toulon star back in the spotlight

Ribbans has also been making headlines in France.

The 6ft 8in forward has returned from a lengthy injury absence and remains an important figure at Toulon.

French publication Midi Olympique highlighted his influence following his return from back problems.

The report explained how the former England international had helped lift those around him.

He also started Toulon's 29-15 victory over Racing 92 on 10 October.

That return to action could be well-timed, with his international eligibility date fast approaching.

Could he follow Jean Kleyn?

Of course, Erasmus has been here before.

In 2023, former Ireland international Jean Kleyn completed his own international switch.

The Munster lock had represented Ireland at the 2019 Rugby World Cup before becoming eligible for South Africa.

What happened next was remarkable.

Kleyn earned a place in the Springboks' 2023 World Cup squad and came off the bench as they beat New Zealand 12-11 in the final.

He went from representing Ireland to becoming a world champion with South Africa.

Could Ribbans follow the same path?

With Erasmus already interested and his eligibility date approaching, the next chapter of his international career could be fascinating.

One thing is certain: a player who helped England finish third at the last World Cup could potentially line up against them at the next.

Have your say: Should David Ribbans switch allegiance to South Africa ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup?
