Manchester United’s academy continues to provide a pathway for young footballers looking to make their mark on the international stage.
The club’s youth teams have enjoyed an encouraging start to the 2026/27 season, with several convincing performances highlighting the talent coming through Carrington.
Darren Fletcher’s Under-18s have beaten Everton, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United and Wolves in the league, while also drawing with Chelsea in the U18 Premier League Cup.
Their most recent league outing ended in a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest, extending a promising opening run despite the narrow defeat to Manchester City earlier in the season.
United’s development system remains focused on preparing young players for increasingly demanding levels of competition, with international football offering another opportunity to accelerate that progress.
The upcoming week will provide a particularly significant test for two of the club’s emerging prospects.
Brian Nyonyi and Joseph Akinsanya have been named in England’s squad for the inaugural FIFA Under-15 World Cup and Festival in Azerbaijan, giving the Manchester United youngsters an opportunity to represent their country at a landmark international tournament.
The call-up is not the first time the pair have been selected together by England.
Brian Nyonyi and Akinsanya were included in the Young Lions’ Under-15 squad for a four-match trip to Croatia in May 2026, with England scheduled to face Japan, Brazil and the hosts before a final placement fixture.
They were also selected for an earlier international programme involving Iceland, Spain and Italy, underlining their continued involvement in the national setup.
Akinsanya is a right-back who has been progressing through United’s youth ranks, while Nyonyi operates in defensive midfield.
The latter has also gained experience with United’s Under-18s despite his age, offering him exposure to a more physically demanding level of academy football.
The inaugural FIFA Under-15 World Cup and Festival runs from 22 to 30 October in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Rather than following the traditional 11-a-side format, the competition uses eight-a-side matches played over two 20-minute halves.
Teams progress through an opening group phase before being placed into different performance tiers, ensuring every nation continues competing throughout the event.
England are due to face Nicaragua, Montenegro, Cambodia, the Republic of Ireland and Zimbabwe during the opening phase, with the results determining their next opponents and placement.
The tournament offers a different challenge from the regular academy schedule, exposing players to unfamiliar opponents and a concentrated run of competitive fixtures.
United will hope both youngsters return from Azerbaijan with valuable international experience as the academy season progresses.
