Lee Johnston hit with major blow to racing career
Lee Johnston has been dealt a significant blow.

FERMANAGH biker Lee Johnston has admitted he does not know what the future holds for his professional career after learning that his current team will cease operations for the 2027 season.

The Maguiresbridge rider revealed the news in an emotional update to his followers, explaining that the announcement had come as a major shock to him and the wider team.

“Am I 100 per-cent wanting to retire right now? That’s not the case,” Johnston said.

“But the cards have been dealt. It’s sort of put me in that situation where I don’t know what my options are going forward as a professional motorbike racer.

“Will I be able to get a job or not? I don’t know.”

Uncertain future

Johnston explained that the team had been informed of the decision the previous week, bringing uncertainty for riders and staff alike.

He acknowledged speculation had been growing following a year during which injuries and a lack of results prevented him from performing at the top in the British Supersport Championship.

However, the Fermanagh man insisted he remained open to continuing his racing career.

“I’m not not looking. It’s something I’m definitely open to doing,” he said.

The decision to close the team was made by its owner, who Johnston explained wanted to focus on taking his sons towards the World Championship.

Despite the disappointing news, Johnston was keen to stress that there were no hard feelings towards the team or its management.

“I will be forever grateful for these few years I’ve been here,” he said.

Johnston explained that returning to the front of the field had been a key objective during his time with the team, following his recovery from serious injuries at the North West 200 in 2023.

The announcement came as Johnston prepared for a race weekend at Brands Hatch, where he was determined to maintain his focus despite the uncertainty surrounding his future.

“There’s no ill feelings with us in the team or anybody in the team,” he added.
