The Minnesota Vikings seem to have a clear flaw. Through the opening half of the season, it hasn’t hurt them yet. But they saw the first signs of trouble in Week 8 as their six-game winning streak came to an end against the Detroit Lions.
The Brian Flores-led defense has been carrying them to wins. But their offense has been suspect at best, with a quarterback who hasn’t worked out nearly as well as the team hoped. As a result, potential reunion rumors were starting to make the rounds before an insider poured cold water on it.
Choosing Kyler Murray over J.J. McCarthy after the latter had just 10 starts gave the Vikings the potential for an explosive offense, pairing Murray’s dual-threat capabilities with an elite group of pass catchers.
However, that hasn’t come to pass, as Murray has managed just five touchdowns with three interceptions this season. As a result, he’s ranked at number 25 on PFN’s NFL Quarterback Impact metrics, sparking a ton of doubt about his viability with the franchise.
Complicating matters further, Murray is week to week with a hamstring strain, leaving Carson Wentz to start Minnesota’s Week 9 matchup against the Buffalo Bills.
In his place, a ton of rumors place the Vikings in line for a potential reunion with Daniel Jones. The Indianapolis Colts quarterback signed a two-year deal worth $88 million in the offseason. But as the season has fallen apart, he could be a trade candidate as part of their fire sale.
Ian Rapoport, though, isn’t sure the Vikings will go after him before the trade deadline. During an appearance on the “Pat McAfee Show,” the veteran insider explained what the current situation was like.
“I would never rule out anything,” Rapoport admitted, before clarifying, “Shane Steichen was sitting in a press conference defending Daniel Jones as a starter. Sometimes that is when it goes the other way.”
But he still finds it unlikely, arguing, “For a team to trade a quarterback midseason, it almost never happens. Now we did just see it with the Baltimore Ravens trading for Jacoby Brissett, who had gotten benched.”
While admitting that the idea “makes a lot of sense,” he remained skeptical that it would actually come to fruition. For the Colts, it would mean giving up on the season entirely, while the Vikings would undergo another quarterback change.
Over the last three seasons, Minnesota has cycled through Sam Darnold, McCarthy, and Murray in search of a long-term answer. But McCarthy did not build on Darnold’s strong 2024 season, and Murray has yet to provide the offensive upgrade Minnesota hoped for.
“I just don’t know if anything is going to actually happen.”
It remains to be seen if the Vikings seek out a quarterback change before the trade deadline. But given the talent on the roster, the right choice at quarterback could instantly make them a legitimate contender.
